Baptism

Water Baptism

Text: Romans 6:1-23

What is baptism?

Its original Greek root word means “to immerse in”. Christian water baptism is the practice of briefly immersing a new Christian in water to symbolize coming into the body of Christ, ie, union with Christ Jesus.

Why be baptized?

– Obedience to the Lord’s command. Mark 16:15-18, Matthew 28:18-20
– Virtually all conversions in the early church followed this directive. Acts 2:37-41, Acts 8:1-13, Acts 8:26-38, Acts 9:10-18, Acts 16:6-15

Purpose of baptism

– Identification with Christ. It is like a declaration, a confirmation/demonstration of confession/profession. Romans 6: 1-5
– Union with Christ Jesus in his death and resurrection. Romans 6:5 Galatians 3:26-29
– Symbolic of death to old, entrance into new. Romans 6:4-14
– It can be a powerful tool for deliverance and healing. Romans 6:1-23
